One of my favorite past times that I do every single day, most of the time more than once a day is read. I not only read to Xavier, but I make a point to read for myself. It is a great way to relax, increase vocabulary, keep your mind going and I actually like for Xavier to see me reading throughout the day. Seeing mommy enjoying a book usually makes him go to his books and start flipping through them. I recommend reading to a lot of people, especially stay at home parents. It is a way for you to leave for a little while, without physically leaving your favorite chair.
I figured with all the reading I do and all the reading I recommend that I should also review some adult books as well as children's books. I was asked to review the first book of a new author named, Ashleigh Slater. Her book is entitled Team Us: Marriage Together. Team Us:Marriage Together encourages other couples to team up and be there for each other. The book is 176 pages and has a nice forward by Dr. Gary Chapman who is the author of the book 5 Love Languages. Ashleigh Slater has a lot of honesty in her writing. As a new writer I found the editing lacking in some areas, but it was much easier to picture myself talking to her over coffee, than read like a regular book. Ashleigh Slater clearly knows how to state what is on her mind. She is refreshing and is really helpful for other couples so that they can learn from her mistakes, compromises and experiences. Team Us:Marriage Together is to help foster cooperation, deepen your commitment to each other, and help you and your partner to exercise grace on a daily basis.
Although I do not fit in the need for marriage advice category, I do enjoy reading books about relationships and have read quite a few similar to this. One of the main things about this book that can either be a plus or minus depending on yourself and your marriage, is that it is extremely Christian based. Each lesson is based on a verse from the Bible and teaches you through the Bible scripture how you can improve your marriage accordingly.
I did enjoy how at the end of every chapter Ashleigh Slater puts "Us Time" questions that you have to ask and go over with your spouse. They are very insightful and also fun questions that I thought would be fun to talk about over drinks or dinner on a date night. The "Us Time" questions can still be done if one partner does not read the book. I enjoyed how she has little tidbits from her husband in every section called "Ted Says". He has some very funny and insightful comments when she discusses problems and solutions they have endured in their marriage. She also includes stories from other couples that she has talked to that had similar situations, which I appreciated the many differences in opinion.
All in all I thought it was a good book for couples who may be starting down a bad path and perhaps want some help in a very Christian way. Ashleigh Slater's writing is very easy to follow and relate to. The advice she gives is very helpful such as picking your battles and denial and discussion. I was disappointed that she did not touch at all on intimacy in a marriage, not just sexual but I think sensuality such as holding hands, hugging, kissing, and cuddling are extremely important and that subject was not even brought up.
