Construction Sites and Toddlers

I can say as a new parent it never occurred to me how much fun seeing a construction site is. Now that Xavier is 28 months old he is facing forward in his car seat. They are doing a lot of major construction on the main road to our house as they are adding a bypass to the city from our little suburbs.
I am glad the bypass is going in and although it gets rid of so many beautiful, natural landscapes it is natural to make some room for progress. The construction makes us stop and wait and then drive slowly through one lane traffic everyday. It really is not that bad of a wait or bother. However, we had no idea just how exciting it is for Xavier to see.
He is now ecstatic every time we get into the car. Then, as we approach the construction area he gets so excited about the cranes, bulldozers, excavators and all the fun construction vehicles that until now he has only seen in his books and on television.
It is funny the things that children notice. It never ceases to amaze me how much adults take for granted. I may have seen thousands of cranes, bulldozers and construction vehicles in my life. There have been times when I was annoyed to see them because I was rushing through them to get somewhere. However, now I do not even mind waiting to watch my little man point and screech with excitement at watching the construction vehicles.
One time one of the construction vehicles was actually in action on the side of the street and we were sitting waiting and he was having a ball. I thought he might jump out of his seat he was so excited. It just goes to show that children really do have the best ways of living. There is no such thing as bad experiences.
So the next time you are stuck in traffic due to construction, try to look at it from a toddlers point of view. I guarantee it will at least make you laugh!
