I notice that as I am about to end my second year with this blog and start my third that many of you have children at different ages, or are even grandparents caring for children of all different ages. Plus, you may not have read some of my previous posts. Please note most of my posts are in the above tabs of About This Blog (basically our story as a family), The Mom Area (inspirational and informative tips and tricks), Epilepsy Awareness (My personal battle with Epilepsy and stories of others, as well as information), Party ThemesRecipes (from appetizers to baby food, check out all my yummies), Reviews (we review everything from places, technology, beauty, fashion, and of course baby and toddler items), Sponsor Information (if you are considering being a sponsor of Next Generation Stay At Home Mom) and Contact (if you want to shoot me an email for whatever reason, all are welcome, so are comments on the blog and social media). You can find other posts by searching or looking through the months and years. However, I thought it would be much easier for you to highlight stories and items every Friday so here you go! I hope you enjoy and all have a great weekend!

The Inn At Cuckolds Lighthouse A Celebration of History

I love beautiful old architecture and my favorite is from the coastal northeast. I love all the houses that would be by the ocean and the beautiful lighthouses. We like to vacation up north a lot as that is where most of my family lives. A wonderful place to visit if you like lighthouses is Maine. There are some beautiful lighthouses in Maine.

I was very delighted to see that a growing group of volunteers came to the rescue of the Cuckolds Fog Signal and Light Station that had protected mariners for more than a century.  The group of volunteers raised funds and developed detailed plans for not only restoring the lighthouse but to also make it an Inn so that is can have a sustainability plan to ensure that the Cuckolds generates its own revenue in the future.

The Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse is now preparing to welcome guests to their offshore island for the first time in history.  The Cuckolds islands are granite islands that consist of two rocky islets rising about 59 feet above high water at the entrance to Booth Bay. The Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse boasts two brand new, modern luxury suites inspired by the history of the lighthouse itself as well as the soft colors and textures of the Maine Coast. There are beautiful 360 degree views at the Inn which make it hard not to have this place be your next vacation tradition or a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They offer their own homemade food at the Inn so you have no excuse to miss the dazzling ocean views.

The nearby town of Boothbay offers many things for people to do such as, harbor cruises, island tours, lobster bakes, whale watches, deep sea fishing, kayaking, nature trails, golf, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the Railway Village & Antique Auto Museum and an Opera House and two play houses.

If you would like to find out more about booking your next vacation to your own island at The Inn At Cuckolds Lighthouse you can visit their website
InnAtCuckoldsLighthouse.com
- they also do tours as well as weddings and special events

Fun Outside with Little Tikes

Summer is just about here, and for the most part we are acting as if it is. We are spending as much time outside soaking up the sunshine as we can. Even though there are so many things in our back yard that Xavier loves to play with including toys and nature items, such as sticks and rocks it is always nice to have some thing that will occupy his time in the yard for a while so we can sit on the porch and enjoy watching him. I have found two such wonderful inventions.

Some good friends of ours have the Little Tikes Anchors Away Water Play Pirate Ship. I love this and so does Xavier. It is just the right height.  I have seen kids from ages one to five playing with this ship. It is all water. Once you fill it up the kids can play with boats, slides, characters, cannons and even a giant spout in the middle to make splashes. It will definitely get your kid wet, but it's great for right after dinner, but before bath and bedtime. Plus, it's much better than a sandbox with all the sand you have to clean up.

We also were able to get the Kids Mountain Climber Slide Playground Little Tikes Safe Endless Adventures. It is a little harder than some toddler toys for Xavier but he loves it! It has a cute fort underneath for the kids to hide. A three way adjustable rock climber, a rope ladder, regular ladder, telescope and slide. It is a great and versatile toy and definitely something Xavier will grow in to. As I have seen older kids enjoy it as well.

I think what I love best about these pieces are they are plastic so they are easy to clean and move and with toddlers that is what you are always doing, moving and cleaning! Be sure to get some fun in the sun this summer and make sure your little ones have some fun new things to play with and enjoy as well as maybe give you some relax time!

You can buy
Kids Mountain Climber Slide Playground Little Tikes Safe Endless Adventures
for $395.99 at Target.

You can also buy
Little Tikes Anchors Away Water Play Pirate Ship for $71.99 at ToysRUS.

Friday Faves Oldies but Goodies

I am sure if you are a regular reader you may have noticed that I do not post every single day anymore. (I never post on weekends, not on the blog, but always check my social media) I usually take one or two days off. Typically this happens towards the end of the week. Due to schedules and myself having a few more issues with my seizures that we are trying to get ironed out, (Read: I Am The Face of Epilepsy) I thought it would be fun to try some Friday Faves Oldies but Goodies.

Review and Giveaway: Dreambaby® Furniture Anchors

I wrote this post while participating in a campaign by Tomoson and received a gift and or payment to thank me for my time. All views and opinions with regard to the products or company itself are my own and were not influenced nor reviewed by the company prior to posting. I am disclosing this according to the FTC guidelines.

Now that Xavier has mastered the art of walking and running he is working on jumping and climbing. The jumping so far I am not too worried about. However, the climbing always makes a mom nervous. It is hard to think of all the things he can get in or on top of, or even use as a stair to get up higher.

Children under the age of five years old are at risk for injury due to furniture falling on them. As crazy as it sounds the furniture and televisions we buy today are made sleek and lightweight so they can easily fall on children who climb on or near them. Televisions are falling on children all over the place due to not latching them properly. At the tender age of two your child can open and climb drawers and dressers; which are not as heavy duty wood as they used to be they topple over easily. Try out your furniture for yourself you will see how easy it tips and you may consider getting some furniture anchors. I would highly recommend any one with children or even who takes care of young children that they get some anchors for their furniture.
We had already anchored our television when we did the first child proofing, but now that Xavier is getting around and into things more I wanted to make sure some of our other things were secure. My main concern was Xavier's dresser. He now can open all the drawers and even puts his clothes away in them. However it is so lightweight it would fall the minute he tried to climb it. We decided to try out the Dreambaby® Furniture Anchor which is perfect for securing items such as dressers, bookcases and cabinets to the wall. It will even work in earthquakes. It works with two parts that you screw into the wall and into the dresser (screws and bolts provided, screwdriver not, we recommend using a powered screwdriver/drill).

You also screw another one of these into the wall.

Next, you position the furniture and slide in the stainless steel attachment and screw on the bolts and it is all finished. We lined it up straight, but you can do it on an angle if you want to. Also, I had Nick help me with this as I am not very handy, (plus picture taking as well), but it is very easy to do with the great instructions provided and anyone can do it. We were extremely pleased with it and now we have peace of mind and all it took was about fifteen minutes.

We also tried out the Dreambaby® Furniture Straps which were also easy to install and install the same way instead they are cloth not stainless steel. What is nice about these straps is if you do not want to screw into the furniture you do not have to you can rest them on it and they hook and hold once you pull the strap taunt. It is recommended that you check to make sure the strap is taunt from time to time to ensure their strength.

Dreambaby® is a company that started out mainly in Australia and now is in 80 different countries and growing. They design products that not only make your home safer to live in but to make your life easier.
We were big fans of the Dreambaby® Furniture Anchors and they were so easy and for the price  you cannot beat them! My only complaint is they are hard to get in the United States right now you have to order off of their Facebook page. That is why they are only getting 4 Stars otherwise they may be more highly ranked.

Is Your Child Over-stimulated?

The over-stimulation of children has been increasingly on the rise.  The wide array of products for babies, toddlers and even events for children have us parents feeling more like a booking and taxi service to our children than parents.
Too often I see parents taking new babies to barbecues and letting them be passed around. I see parents schlepping toddlers from one birthday party to the next. I see parents enrolling their school age children into as many extracurricular activities as possible. All the time we are thinking this is good. We should give our children lots of new experiences. They should be comfortable around lots of people.
How comfortable do you really want your child to be? Chances are they are not happy with what you are doing. Studies prove that time with children is what helps them to thrive. As parents you have to remember that we are their "nest". We have to have a stable nest, one that your children feel safe, loved and relaxed in. When your children are loved and safe at home they are able to go out and try new things and take on the world because they know you have their back and they can always come home and be loved and have some space to relax in. Even babies are not much different from adults.

Although adults relax it never occurs to us that our children need to relax as well as us. Even babies need to relax. We have to show and teach our children the importance of not being overstimulated and taking time to relax in our day.

Over-stimulation can happen when a child is swamped by many experiences, sensations, noise and activity than he/she can cope with. A baby can get unsettled after being at a party and being held by many adults. Toddlers and Pre-School age children may have a tantrum during or even after leaving a party. School age children get cranky if they go to school then after-school care and then an extracurricular lesson. From birth to preschool age children's brains grow very fast, so children need lots of learning opportunities but be careful to teach them to slow down and not to overdue things.
When babies get over-stimulated they become very cranky and tired and are very hard to soothe. They may cry a lot, and even turn their heads away from you. An over-stimulated baby's movements may be jerky, he/she may clench their fists, wave their arms or kick. If your baby gets overstimulated do not dangle toys in front of your baby. Be sure to give your baby quiet time in a predictable and familiar setting. Take baby somewhere quiet to calm down. Sometimes quiet time in the crib helps or sometimes just playing quietly on a blanket with one or two toys is all that is needed. A great way to calm your baby and keep them from getting overstimulated is wearing them in a carrier or even swaddling them.

When Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers get over-stimulated they get cranky, upset, tired, hard to manage, and may not want to do a particular activity anymore that they are usually happy to do. If your child becomes overstimulated be sure to reduce noise first. At this age, screens and noises are usually what makes them over-stimulated. Be sure to turn everything off, television, radio or anything you have that may be noisy. A good thing to do is to take them to their room and see if they can pick out a quiet activity such as coloring, reading, or just laying down on the bed together or giving each other back rubs. Once your child calms down be sure they get some time to quietly play alone. Also, changing the environment helps as well. Try going for a walk or to the park or even in your back yard or sitting on your porch coloring with chalk.

If your School Age Child gets over-stimulated it can result in major behavior problems, problems concentrating and even sleep and bed wetting issues. If they become over-stimulated help them to put into words what they are feeling so that you can know exactly what it is that is over-stimulating them. School age children can be over-stimulated by the same things as toddlers and pre-schoolers or from activities and things that they are involved in so it is important to pin point the problem. Suggest to them to go to a quiet place to lay down, read or listen to music quietly. School age children benefit most from only one or two extracurricular activities that they are really interested in.

Children benefit the most from quietly entertaining themselves and exploring their environment in their own way and at their own pace. By giving your child the chance to really explore their environment and spend time in quiet activities it teaches them a valuable life skill of the ability to occupy yourself. Self play and quiet time let's your child also reflect and think about what they want to learn and do and see. You will be surprised what an everyday quiet time can add to both your child's and your life!

Don't forget to enter this week's giveaway of a full size bottle of BabyCare Sunscreen (A $26 value)!
