For Xavier's first birthday my husband and I decided to get him some special items. We got him a pull along Very Hungry Caterpillar, as that was the theme of his birthday party and I thought that would be a great way for him to remember it and have keepsake from it. (see party details here) We also decided to invest in a couple of nice Melissa and Doug toys. We got him one of their puzzles and the Pound and Roll Tower.
Since I have a son there are a ton of balls that are constantly rolling around our house. He loves balls. We thought the pound and roll tower would be perfect for him. It has been three and a half months since his birthday and it is still going very strong! It is definitely one of his favorite toys. He loves to hit the balls and they roll down the different planks to the outside. He finds it hysterical and laughs every time the balls fall down from it. He actually will spend a lot of time simply playing with this one toy. I like it because it has beautiful, brightly colored balls and they make a neat clicking sound as they go down the planks. What is also nice is that the balls are wooden as well so they are very durable. They have gotten a couple of bumps on them but they still work perfectly fine.
I am impressed by Melissa and Doug toys not just because of the durability and fun that this Pound and Roll Tower provides but also because the puzzle that we got for his birthday, we had a problem with. Xavier easily ripped the stickers off of the puzzle. In the matter of a few seconds, as I was right there with him when he did it. I was very upset. Although I admit that the Pound and Roll Tower is rated for a two year old the puzzle was rated for a one year old. Yet, as much as Xavier loved it I had to take it away from him. I promptly wrote Melissa and Doug and told them about how easy it was for him to pull of the stickers and that we had only had it a couple of weeks and it is very dangerous if in fact any other children could pull off the stickers and perhaps eat them. They promptly called me and we worked out an arrangement. They sent me a replacement toy and I sent back the puzzle so they could see what the problem was. I was very impressed that not only did they send a replacement toy but that they actually took the puzzle back. I felt like they were actually caring and wanted to know what had happened to the stickers to make sure there are not more out there like that.
I do not know many toy companies that stand by their toys the way that Melissa and Doug do and I am very grateful for it. Although the new toy is not as much fun as the puzzle was, we are hoping someday soon he can try out another puzzle. Until then, I am glad he is getting a ton of amusement from the Pound and Roll Tower. As it is a great toy for your child to play with, learn from and it even is something fun that you can do together.
There are so many toys that come with a million bells and whistles. Sometimes we forget that the simplicity of some toys is what really makes them superior to others. Sometimes it is in the simplicity of the toy that we realize that it creates a venue for us to connect with our children in ways we might not be able to with a toy that lights up and makes tons of noises. For it is in the quiet and relaxing play that we see our children shine and I am glad that Melissa and Doug make toys that bring out that type of play not only in our children but in our family as well.
You can purchase the Pound and Roll Tower for around $19.99 on the Melissa and Doug website or other retailers.
